Finish No.2 - 2nd Q

Finish #2 this quarter is based on Missouri Star Quilt Company's Whimsical Shoo-Fly pattern, and used my left over Momo Flying Colors layer cake squares, plus two matching 10" squares I cut from my stash.

To make this quilt and the Color Weave quilt you need a total of 44 layer cake squares.  They are perfect companion lap quilts!  I made a pair of them at Christmastime last year for my nieces...the fabrics match, but the quilts are different!  Perfect for sisters!

For my version of the quilt, I added 2" sashing between the Shoo-Flys with pinwheel cornerstones made from the cut-offs from the Shoo-Fly HST units.

I backed the quilt with this cute bicycle fabric from my stash.  Between this and the Color Weave quilt the only fabric I purchased was for binding...which, in the end, was the wrong I used stash!  Woo-hoo!  Stash Busting!

I sent this quilt into MSQC for quilting, using the Dragonflies and Flowers pattern.

Some Stats for the quilt:
Size: 56" X 66"
Quilting: MSQC - Dragonflies and Flowers
Started: 10/25/16
Finished: 04/17/17
Fabric Used: All stash - 100%!

This makes finish #5 for 2017...and 45 remaining UFO's (32 remaining on the 2nd Q List)

Finish No. 1 - 2nd Q

Bad pictures....of a very cute quilt!

I really need to work on my picture taking skills...and of course, not waiting until the very last second to snap a quick pic as the quilt is walking out of the door to its new home, might be the starting point!

Anyway, this was a pretty fun quilt to make, and really fast!  The pattern is called Color Weave by Julie Hirt (found at the Moda Bakeshop).  I made the Throw size, which uses 24 Layer Cake squares.  The fabric is by Momo, called Flying Colors.  It's a layer cake I have had in my stash for a couple of years.

I've made this pattern twice now...and really love how it showcases the fabrics.

33061 16
I love this print!

I sent the quilt to MSQC for quilting...and really, how perfect is this kite pattern!  I fell in love the second I saw it!

So that's it...the first finish for the quarter, which I actually finished on April 17th, but didn't take pictures until May 30th...and then got around to blogging on June 20th.

Some Stats for the quilt:
Size: 57" X 68"
Quilting: Missouri Star Quilt Company - Kites pattern
Started: 10/25/16
Finished: 04/17/17
Fabric Used: All stash - 100%!

This makes finish #4 for 2017...and 44 remaining UFO's.

WIP Wendsday

I know, I just posted a quarter end status update and right before that the new quarter goals...but since then (yes, since Monday) I have have made progress!  I've ripped out and restarted the quilting on my Red & White Scrappy Trip Irish Chain...RWSTIC, for short (wink-wink)...and things are moving along pretty quickly.

I love those little scooter girls!
Simple cross-hatching, but I think it will be perfect for this quilt!

I love this is an extra-wide from Connecting Threads, and a great match for the top!

And of course, what I'm working on also means, what the cats are working on, right?

Helper #1, Joe, holding the quilt down...should it decide to up and run away from the sewing machine!

And helper #2, Elaine, making sure there are no mistakes on the underside!

2017 First Quarter Round-up

I'm such a dolt!  I finished two of my UFO's from my 1st quarter FAL list...and just realized this morning, I never published the second blog post.  Which means I never got that finish linked up...doh! least it's finished (and now posted retroactively).

Anyway, on to the 1st Quarter list...and how I did (not too shabby, if I say so myself...and I do):

The Red & White Scrappy Trip/Irish Chain:  I love this quilt.  I finished all the blocks and got the top put together and basted.  I even got one row of quilting done...but then set it aside.  That's okay though, I'm glad my unfinished top list is dwindling...if I can just keep my promise to not start anymore new projects for awhile!

The 2014 Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery:  So beautiful!  This one also moved from the unfinished top list to the needs quilting list.  I have a backing all ready for it...I'm leaning towards "dot-to-dot" quilting for each of the stars...

The Feathers Star Pillow: No change...

The Hexagon Baby Quilt: Finished! Gifted! And currently being loved on!

Dapper Dan/Strip Quilt: No change...

Hand-pieced Henry: Still plugging along...hand quilting is slow work for me!

FQS Snapshots Quilt:  The top is done!  I have a little bit of embroidery to do one the backing...and then it will be ready for quilting.  This one is sooooo cute!  It definitely deserves some special quilting!

Clovers: Done...and over-with!  My mom loved it, at least someone did!  Such a cute pattern...I think I just didn't love my tastes changed.

Black Cats and Pink Polka-dots: The top is done...and looks great.  I need to decide what I want as a backing...I'm considering a pink minky, and then gifting it to a cat-loving friend.

Cherry Tweet:  I made progress on this...but not a lot.  I have a lot of the applique blocks fused down, but not sewn.  Progress is good!

In the end, I finished 20% of my list...I'm good with that!  And I moved five unfinished tops of that list!

Next's all about the quilting!

2017 2nd Quarter Finish-A-Long

So...quick and fast, before I miss the deadline...

My 2nd Quarter Finish-A-Long projects, all 34 of them!  This quarter I am going to focus on quilting instead of piecing...

Diamond Tread, Cat Chevron, Pink Cts, FQS 2014 Mystery, FQS Snapshots, Oh My Stars, Blue Geese, Dapper Dan, Box Lunch, Kaffe Ribbons, Hawaiian 1600, AppleStars, Scrappy Paths, You+Me Batik, Bee Row Along, En Provence Variation, Batik Chevron, Christmas Geese, 12/26, Round Robin, Aunt Ruth's, Feathered Stars, Placemats, Red Chain, Log Cabin, Feathered Star Pillow, Adore floral, Hand-dyed stars, Quilted Oak Leaves, Shoo Fly, Color Weave, Kaffe Lattice, Canoe Ridge, Pins & Paws

Edited to add: Of the 34 UFO's on my list, two only need bindings (really, why haven't I done this yet!), five have the quilting started (even if it is just one row of quilting!), one is basted and ready to quilt (I just need to get the courage up to do more feathers!), fourteen have backings made and are ready to be basted (after I buy another roll of batting), nine need a backing made, one needs borders and two are still being pieced into tops.

I know I won't really get all theses done, even by a long shot!  But I just threw all of the completed tops on the list...I really want to focus on quilting over piecing this quarter...and you can never tell what kinda quilting you're in the mood for, right...straight-line, hand quilting, free-motion...easy or challenging...lightly quilted or heavily.  And as long as I make some progress, I'm happy!

Wish me luck!  And I wish all of the FAL-ers luck this quarter!

The Tickled Pink Beachy Quilt...

Every year my local quilt shop, A Quilted Heart, puts on a fantastic fundraiser for breast cancer research called Tickled Pink.  A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to be asked to help with the organizing of the event...a highlight in my year!

Tickled Pink 2015 (I don't have pictures from last year's...strange)

The event is a 12 hour sew-in...dinner included!  There is some free sew time, eating time (all the time), silent auction and raffle time, group bee-sewing time of a huge charity quilt (raffled off the following year at Relay for Life) and after midnight there is "mystery quilt" time.

Last year the event's theme was Toes in the Sand...and I picked some cute fabric 1/3 yard cuts I had in my stash that were very beachy for the "mystery quilt".

And got to sewing...well, at least as much as I could functioning on no sleep at 2 in the morning!

I sent the quilt to Missouri Star Quilt Co for long-arm quilting...

...FLIP-FLOPS!  How perfect is that!

I just love how everything turned out...this one may find a permanent place in my home...hmmm

Some Stats for the quilt:
Size: 68" X 74"
Quilting: Missouri Star Quilting - flip-flops
Started: 10/15/16
Finished: 02/10/17
Fabric Used: All stash, but not all scraps

This makes finish #3 for 2017...and 44 remaining UFO's (8 remaining on the 1stQ List)

Finish No.2 - 1st Q

I've finished my second project from my 2017 Finish-a-Long 1st Quarter list...yay!

Part of my strategy for finishing up all of my...ahem... 47 remaining UFO's (yes, I've added 7 new one this year), is to spend a little time with each of them...and decide if it is a project I want to finish.

With Clovers, I decided I really love the pattern (Fig Tree & Co has such cute patterns!)...and I used to really like the fabrics, but honestly...

...they were old-old stash, back from when I started quilting in the mid-90's.

So with that in mind...I had 12 blocks done, two each of six different fabric match-ups.  I decided that was enough to make a small version.

I laid out 9 of the blocks, 3X3...used the pattern's sashing instructions, and added just one outside border.  Done!

Aren't my mom's camelias beautiful!
I used it as a practice piece for FMQ meandering in the background, and did some straight line quilting with my walking-foot in the "clovers".

I took it up to my mom's to take some pictures...and she just loved it, so there it stayed! mom loved this fabric!  I was just trying to use it up!
Some Stats for the quilt:
Size: 46" X 46"
Quilting: FMQ meander and walking-foot straight lines on my Pfaff
Started: 01/21/12
Finished: 02/07/17
Fabric Used: All stash - 100%! (and some very-very old)

2nd item checked off my UFO list!

This makes finish #2 for 2017...and 45 remaining UFO's (8 remaining on the 1stQ List)

Finish No. 1 - 1st Quarter

Finish No.1!  And so much fun to make!

When I was at Quiltcon last year, I took a fun class with Amy Smart, Advanced Piecing Techniques.  One of the techniques we talked about in the class was partial seams and piecing hexagons and after lessons, we were allowed to use the Accu-Cut machines in class...I cut all the fabric scraps I brought, into a bunch of really big hexagons.

Fast forward 10 months....I decided to just piece them all together and play with some fun FMQ flowers in each patch.  I'm happy with how the flowers turned out, they are kinda hibiscus looking.

We also talked about diamond piecing...

I found this great bright plaid in my stash for the binding...and there you have it, finish No. 1.

I gifted this quilt to a friend's granddaughter...I hope she uses it and loves it until it falls to pieces!

Some Stats for the quilt:
Size: 40" X 45"
Quilting: FMQ flowers and loops on my Pfaff
Started: 02/20/16
Finished: 02/06/17
Fabric Used: All stash - 100%! (I love when I can do that!)

1st item checked off my UFO list!

This makes finish #1 for 2017...and 46 remaining UFO's (9 remaining on the 1st Q List)

2017 First Quarter Finish-A-Long

Okay...I'm gearing up for the 1st Quarter Finish-A-Long...

I spent a few minutes hours last night and looked over my UFO list...and visited with the projects in my Sewing Room...and got very distracted, because everything I took out to photograph I wanted to start working on right away..but finally narrowed my list down to something I can focus on for the next three months.

This time I didn't just throw all of my UFO's into the pot...

I picked ten items to focus on...

Cherry Tweet, by Chitter Chatter Designs
There is a lot of applique in this pattern...I have a lot of projects that are UFOs because of appliqueing...I love the look, just not the work, but now that my sewing machine has a blanket stitch I am vowing to finish this quilt!  ...side note...this is all flannel, I have a feeling the 90"x90" top will be very heavy!

Clovers, by Fig Tree & Co.
I started this quilt in 2012...with a lot of very old (and quite few ugly) fabrics, but overall I like the I'm gonna plug along.

HST Diamonds (no pattern, just a layout)
This is just a simple quilt made of HSTs in some cute fabrics.  The black fabric has black cats on it with pink ears and green eyes!

2014 Fat Quarter Shop Mystery BOM
...So close to finishing this (shaking head) close, just two more blocks to go.  Most of the top is already put together and waiting for the last stars...but don't we all have those UFOs?  The ones that we can't understand why we stopped working on when they are so close to being finished?  Don't we?

Snapshots, by Fat Quarter Shop
...another one so so very close to being finished...four blocks to go on this one.  Luckily the pieces are cute and ready to be sewn...

Scrappy Trip, by Bonnie Hunter
This is the second Scrappy Trip quilt I am making (I can report the first has been finished and is currently being used).  I've kinda puttered with this quilt, adding strips of red and white as I come across them, never really paying too much attention to how many partial blocks (the ones on the left) I have...but I think I have plenty to get a decent sized throw out them...time to move this little doggie along...

Strip Quilt
This is a scrappy quilt I put together to practice play with free motion quilting on.  I got a copy of Angela Walters' Shape by Shape II book and Christa Watson's Machine Quilting with Style for I'm itching to get this under the needle!

Hexagon Baby Quilt
Scrappy quilt...destined for a friend's grandbaby...I'm thinking flowers maybe...

Pillow from Perennial Star, by American Jane
This is just one feathered star from Sandy Klops' pattern...the stars finish about 20"square.  I'm using wool batting ('cause it's fluffy) and ideas from Shape by Shape II to turn this into a wintertime throw pillow for the bed.  I guess that makes this a Perennial Snowflake then...

Hand Sewn Henry, by Me (based on my cat Henry)
And this is the world's oldest UFO...okay maybe not the world's oldest, but definitely mine.  I started this back in the good ol' days of the mid-nineties.  The top is entirely hand pieced,  but for the life of me I don't know why?  I had a really nice fairly new Pfaff back then...but I have several quilt tops that are hand-pieced...and I need to add, hand-pieced very poorly!  Maybe I was sewing them while commuting on BART?  Who knows...  This top had everything on it but the appliqued flowers (again with the applique) when I pulled it out on New Year's day.  I cut out some flowers, stems and leaves, got the shapes turned under and tacked into place...and then hand sewn on with a blanket stitch and embroidery floss all while binge watching Stranger Things on Netflix...woo-hoo!  And last night I started the hand-quilting...'cause it needs to be entirely hand-sewn, right?

So that's it...ten UFOs to work on for this quarter...wish me and all of the 2017 1st Quarter FALers  good luck!

And a collage for the link-up party...

The Finishes of 2016

Okay...I'm not very good at keeping up with blogging...

...which led me to miss the not only the 3rd Quarter 2016 Finish-A-Longs...sigh...but also the 4th Quarter.

Sigh...[insert sound of palm hitting forehead]

But in the spirit of end of the year wrap-ups...(only six days late)...I did make my goal of having only 40 (yes 4-0) UFOs remaining on my list at midnight on December 31st.

Tiny quilt from MSQ tutorial
Yay me!

Another finish from a MSQ Tutorial
On January 1st, I had 61 unfinished various stages from "cut but not pieced" to "finished flimsy" all the way to one that "just needs binding".

By December 31st, I had finished: (drum-roll please)

3 Bed-sized quilts (one twin and two king)

My 1st King size quilt!

19 Lap quilts

Big Lap Quilt

10 Small quilts (think wall size to cat size...or baby size, whatever)

Started at QuiltCon...finished for Rooster (the cat on the right)

That's a total of 32 finished quilts...29 quilted by me and 3 quilted by credit card (thanks MSQ and Sew Shabby Quilting!)

Quilted by Me!  (from this awesome pattern)

Also...I purged some really old fabric stash (to friends and charity) and 13 UFO projects that were just never going to get finished (again to friends and charity)...let's be honest, tastes change.

Speaking of really old UFOs, the 2016 finish that wins the prize for being the oldest (started in 1997!) is this tiny Irish Chain, which now keeps my washing machine nice and dust free!  Thank you!

An oldy...but goody (37"square...and it took 19 years to finally finish!)

I also may have sort of maybe did add 24 quilts to the list this year...(I wanna make all the quilts!)

Added...AND finished this year!
So here is 2016's score sheet...
61 UFO's
-32 Finishes
-13 Deletions
+24 Additions
40 Remaining

Yay me!
I think I need to work on my picture taking skills

Let's see what 2017 can do for this...

Tops ready to be basted, quilted and bound...
